The newsletter presents six articles and associated information concerned with assistive technology for children and youth with handicaps. "Technology: Becoming an Informed Consumer" (Elizabeth Lahm and Sue Elting) reviews the history of technology with emphasis on assistive technology, offers case studies on technology applications, and gives guidelines for making informal choices when purchasing home computer software and selecting assistive technology equipment. "Assistive Technology: A Parent's Perspective" (Julie Fleisch) notes problems parents have in keeping up with available technology and financing needed technology. "Federal Legislation and Assistive Technology" (Roxanne Rice) summarizes provisions and requirements pertaining to assistive technology under six federal laws. "Effective Use of Technology with Young Children" (Mary L. Wilds) notes skills needed for interactive use of computers, selection of battery-operated toys and switches, and introducing young children to computers. "Integrating Technology into a Student's IEP" (Ruth Bragman) reviews technology in the context of students' individualized education programs (IEPs), discussing hardware adaptations, student assessment/evaluation considerations, traditional and technological considerations, and selection of devices and software and identification of their operational characteristics. "Starting the Funding Process" (Suzanne Ripley) offers families suggestions for acquiring funding for assistive technology.
