Financing a College Education. Money Management.
Household International, Prospect Heights, IL. Money Management Inst.
This booklet provides guidance for students and families who seek help in meeting college costs. It begins with guidelines for developing a funding strategy, with tips on how to calculate amount needed and planner's net worth and including sample budget forms and balance sheets. This section is followed by descriptions of the investments considered most suitable for college savings. The next section covers borrowing from retirement plans or by taking out home equity loans. Information on types of investments available in Canada only is included. The next section contains information for high school students on ways they can meet some of the costs themselves. It systematically explores the types of financial aid offered by the federal and state governments, colleges, businesses, and community groups, including scholarships, grants, work study programs, and loans. Cooperative education, tuition reimbursement plans, and other ways to reduce the burden of college costs are then discussed. Money management for college students is addressed in a section that focuses on day-to-day expenses, setting up a financial plan, checking accounts, credit cards, and managing consumer credit. A final section looks at financial concerns after graduation, such as repaying student loans, avoiding default, and creating a new financial plan. A glossary and two lists of suggested resources, one for organizations and the other for print materials, are appended. (YLB)
