How Elementary Is "Wikipedia"?
Fontichiaro, Kristin; Harvey, Carl A., II
School Library Monthly, v27 n2 p22-23 Nov 2010
Despite easy access to expert resources and extensive in-school modeling, students--even the youngest--are relying heavily upon "Wikipedia," especially when they do research away from school. With "Wikipedia" holding steady as one of the top ten Web sites worldwide, it is no wonder students are flocking there. For teachers, parents, and students, "Wikipedia" is often the first site they try; it's a recognizable "brand." "Wikipedia's" length, reading level, and uncertain editorship give school librarians pause; however, banning students' favorite site can marginalize school librarians. Instead, what school librarians need to do is show students, parents, and staff members how to be effective users of "Wikipedia." In this article, the authors provide an overview of "Wikipedia." They also urge school librarians to make teachers aware of other resources that may be more appropriate for young users and to make sure that when designing projects, these resources are available for students.
