Inreach: The Inside Step to Outreach
Germain, Carol Anne
Public Services Quarterly, v2 n2-3 p221-227 2006
After undertaking the time and energy consuming task of reference assessment, the library might discover that it needs to tweak delivery of service, weed and update the collection, upgrade workstations, or advance marketing strategies to get patrons to use reference materials and services. Like any other product or service, reference departments need to market their wares to generate increased usage and draw awareness to these essential library resources. Outreach efforts can be fundamental in getting patrons into the library. In addition to outreach, the library also needs to conduct inreach, which includes advertising and promoting reference resources within the library. In this article, the author discusses how inreach efforts can be an effective strategy that offers additional assistance to patrons, and offers some suggestions and ideas on how to begin the process.
