Building Rubrics: A Step-By-Step Process
Brown, Carol A.
Library Media Connection, v26 n4 p16-18 Jan 2008
School media specialists hold the key to ensuring successful research projects that bring the world, and its vast amount of information, into a manageable perspective. More than ever, professionals in school libraries have the responsibility of guiding students to become information literate citizens in this new century. An important contribution they can make to information literacy is the design and development of reliable rubrics for evaluating student research projects. In this article, the author discusses the steps involved in creating a quality rubric: (1) Information literacy and content standards are the foundation; (2) Expectations for both process and product; (3) Decide on depth of evaluation; and (4) Make decisions on rating scale. Sample rubrics for young researchers and middle and secondary school students are presented. (Contains 3 tables.)
