Why Adults Use the Public Library: A Research Perspective.
Marchant, Maurice P.
This book discusses the motivations that cause adults to go to the public library. It is grouped into eight sections concerning: (1) the research methodology and results used to determine four motivators that were good predictors of library use; (2) the development of library research; (3) several characteristics of library users in terms of education, employment and occupational classes, age, sex, family income, number of minor children, marital status, school attendance, access to a car, companions, political preference, and distance from home to library; (4) measures of library use and their interrelationships; (5) motivators of specific and composite library uses such as home and family life, vocational growth, church attendance, and political; (6) motivators and user characteristics in the same areas as section 3; (7) user characteristics and use in the same areas as sections 3 and 6; and (8) conclusions about the questions posed regarding the uses of public libraries by adults. There are two appendices: the first contains the interview questions and responses and the second outlines problems and null hypotheses. (Contains 32 references.) (DGM)
