This manual for children's librarians was produced in conjunction with the Kentucky bicentennial and is intended to help find ways for children to experience the past; to stimulate ideas about book-related programs suited to individual communities and resources; and to suggest history-related activities. The manual is presented in seven sections: (1) publicity--ideas for promoting the READiscover Kentucky concept; (2) history--history program ideas and activities, many of which actually took place in Kentucky in former times; (3) folklife--(By Robert and Janet Gates), with ideas for children and adult programming; (4) environment--environmental history of Kentucky and activities for promoting recycling and nature conservation; (5) performing artists--description of individual Appalachian storytellers, entertainers, and musicians; (6) bibliography--a listing of approximately 200 books and materials that are associated with sections of the manual; and (7) reproduction masters--for use in promoting READiscover Kentucky and with activities about the state in general.
