California Librarians Black Caucus/UCLA Mentor Program Handbook.
California Univ., Los Angeles. Graduate School of Library and Information Science.
This handbook for the Mentor Program of the California Librarians Black Caucus (CLBC) and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) begins by stating that the purpose of the program is to increase the number of African American librarians and other information professionals in California. The first two of five chapters in the manual present the program's goals and objectives. The third chapter presents guidelines designed to provide direction for establishing and maintaining a mentor program, and the fourth focuses on the operating structure, i.e., the advisory committee, program administration, participant recruitment, mentor training workshops, pairing of mentors and proteges, and monitoring and evaluating the program. The fifth chapter focuses on the mentor/protege relationship, including the various roles that the mentor must assume; expectations about the protege; building the relationship; the roles and responsibilities of the protege; and maintaining the relationship. A summary of the program concludes the handbook. (10 references) (MAB)
