Automation of Oklahoma School Library Media Centers: A Plan for the Development of Technology in Library Media Centers.
Oklahoma State Dept. of Education, Oklahoma City. Library and Learning Resources Section.
This training manual and statewide plan begins by describing the role of the Oklahoma State Department of Education, Library Resources/Technology Section as one of providing leadership, consultation, communication, and coordination in the systematic development of technology in Oklahoma school library media centers. Information about the Oklahoma School Library Automation Network is then presented, followed by a detailed outline of the process of automation at the local level. This process begins with planning, which covers: (1) levels of school library media services; (2) library automation functions (library management, collection management, information access); (3) automation needs assessment; (4) costs and timeline; (5) automation committee; (6) district plan; and (7) board of education. The steps in database creation are then outlined, including standardization, weeding, inventory and shelf list, and retrospective conversion. Other steps in the process are also described; i.e., software selection, hardware selection, installation, and operation and maintenance. Implementation of the statewide plan and the development of a statewide school library database are described in the final sections. A checklist for a building-level media center profile to help decision-makers choose whether or not to automate is included, as well as a checklist for an assessment of system requirements. Attached materials include a collection of eight brief articles for supplementary reading, a sample outline for a library media long range plan, and an evaluation form for a local level workshop.
