School Safety in Turkey and the Role of School Counselor
Guven, Mehmet
International Journal of Educational Reform, v12 n4 p317-324 Fall 2003
A school is an institution that presents students information, competence, attitudes, and culture. One of the basic conditions in reaching the objectives of education, which is a need for both individuals and society, is to create a safe and comfortable school environment. Such an environment increases student success, protecting mental health and facilitating development. School safety cannot be achieved by only punishing the students--prevention is the key. In Turkey, especially in big cities, various services are performed by school counseling and guidance service in order to prevent students from committing crime and also to inform both teachers and students. Such services need to become widespread in all schools of Turkey and they also need updating. As in any activity in school, the person most responsible related to school safety is the school administrator. However, throughout the process, counselors have some important duties. This article discusses the duties that school counselors can undertake in order to create a safe and homelike school environment. To implement these tasks effectively, counselors must be given related courses by counseling and guidance departments of Turkish universities. To make counselors more effective in school safety, organizing counseling services in school and increasing the number of counselors is of great importance.
