A Musical Chronology and the Emerging Life Song
Duffey, Thelma
Journal of Creativity in Mental Health, v1 n1 p141-147 2005
This article describes an intervention used by the author in her clinical practice. Some clients have a need to resolve relationship issues. "A Musical Chronology" has been a helpful resource for this work. Through the chronology, clients examine their life/love stories, share these stories with their therapist, and work through grief or other issues related to these experiences. In exploring how stories, perceptions, and relational images can limit a person's capacity to enjoy and appreciate shared life and love with others, and by using music as a catalyst, one can have an opportunity to access and resolve latent grief experiences and reconsider cumbersome perceptions that deter relationship success. The author's love for music and inclination toward self-reflection have inspired her to develop this intervention. It is the premise of this intervention that music is one way to help clients discover ways to revisit their thoughts, perceptions, images, or "stories" related to love and relationship and to address this need. Here, the author discusses the four stage process of "A Musical Chronology" and presents a framework for its implementation.
