Finding the Shoe that Fits: Experiential Approaches for First Practicum
O'Connell, William P.; Smith, Jacqueline
Guidance & Counselling, v20 n3-4 p158-162 Spr-Sum 2005
Graduate counselling students in the first semester of practicum are challenged to learn the basic active listening sequence while simultaneously learning to engage in the supervision process. Students struggle with confusion and self-doubt as they attempt to develop self-efficacy as a professional counsellor. Adult learning theory and experiential learning approaches are considered effective in building competence and motivating students to learn across disciplines. In this article, the authors share three experiential exercises aimed at increasing counsellor self-efficacy in the first practicum.
