Counselor Preparation, 1999-2001: Programs, Faculty, Trends. Tenth Edition.
Hollis, Joseph W.
To help educators, students, employers, and administrators of programs stay abreast of program changes, details of counseling programs across the United States are provided in this text. It is part of a longitudinal study in which a snapshot is taken every three years of counselor preparation programs. The nine preceding studies on counselor preparation formed the basic outline for the research design and data sources for the tenth study. Ultimately, 542 academic departments were identified as meeting the criteria of having a counselor education program and have been included in the study. These departments responded to requests for detailed information about the faculty, the administrative unit, and programs offered. National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) certified counselors are identified by institutions in an effort to denote programs whose faculty recognize themselves as counseling professionals. In addition to listing faculty by name, the text gives detailed information on each separate program, degree offered, accreditation held (if any), departmental addresses and telephone numbers, admission and graduation requirements, number of students admitted and graduating annually, clinical experience required in clock hours, placement settings of graduates, and unique features of each program. Using a statistical treatment of the aforementioned data, the book also interprets the status and probable trends of preparation programs within each counseling specialty. Also considered are the current emphases within the counseling field, and the ways in which these factors are being reflected within counselor education settings. Includes a subject index and a faculty index. (GCP)
