Counseling Employment Bound Youth.
Herr, Edwin L.
Employment-bound youth have largely been ignored in the literature on careers and on counseling and guidance. Divided into seven chapters, this book provides recommendations and specific suggestions for actions that counselors, administrators, and policy makers can adopt to respond to the challenge of providing for employment-bound youth. Chapter 1 describes the characteristics of employment-bound youth and the critical role they play in this nation's economic structure. Chapter 2 investigates the implications of the changing economic environment for employment-bound youth, addressing the global economy, advanced technology, and changing educational demands for workers. Chapter 3 makes recommendations on what can and should be done in schools to enhance the skills of students preparing to enter the workplace. Chapter 4 discusses the school-to-work transition. Chapter 5 describes six approaches to career counseling for employment-bound youth. Chapter 6 looks at additional career guidance activities that can supplement counseling to form comprehensive programs for employment-bound youth. Chapter 7 summarizes current policy challenges and makes recommendations for policy that can support career counseling and guidance. Contains 28 pages of references. (JE)
