This document consists of part four of a book of readings that examine issues affecting men in the late 20th century. It was written for counselors at all educational levels, social workers, community therapists, private practitioners, clinicians, teachers, hospital workers, and Employee Assistance Program workers. Four chapters are included in this fourth section, which is on counseling techniques and treatments. "A Personal Perspective on Working With Men in Groups" (Patrick Dougherty) describes a psychotherapist's experience with men in groups, examining the circular nature of psychotherapist with men in groups, examining the circular nature of men's journeys into emotions and intimate relationships. "Helping Men Become More Emotionally Expressive: A Ten-Week Program" (Dwight Moore) provides step-by-step descriptions of readings, experiential activities, and group process for a 10-week group designed to increase emotional expressiveness. "Treating Men Who Batter: A Group Approach" (Roger Grusznski and Gunnar Bankovics) describes a particular program that helps men understand their behavior, control that behavior, and develop alternatives to deal with their underlying emotions and tension. "Counseling Suicidal Men" (Dennis Elsenrath) outlines the causative factors in suicide, focuses on male relationships, and looks at special populations at risk for suicide. Assessment of suicidal intent and myths concerning suicide are thoroughly discussed and resources and approaches for suicide prevention are suggested. (NB)
