Intended to aid administrators and advisors of foreign students from developing nations enrolled in U.S. colleges and universities, the guide offers suggestions for all stages of the advising process. A chapter on planning and selection considers factors concerning pre-admission, admission, determining English language proficiency, and finances. The second chapter covers communication with the student prior to arrival and discusses notification, orientation to the U.S. education system, orientation to the campus and community, and selection of advisors. The third and fourth chapters briefly consider the initial campus contact with the student and the term of study. Chapter 5 discusses the essentials of advising including cross-cultural considerations, sponsored student programs, practical training, and field research and thesis advising. Briefly considered are some ways in which the student's campus and community experience might be enriched. The final chapter concerns preparing the student to return to his/her home country and provides suggestions re: professional networks, the job search, the post-educational contact, and followup, evaluation, and continuing education.
