This handbook was designed as a resource for middle school personnel to use in meeting Oregon's required one-half credit in career development. It provides information for school personnel concerned with developing a set of educational, career, and vocational guidance responsibilities and with clarifying the duties of middle school counselors and teachers. A team approach to career and vocational guidance that involves a career education coordinator, counselors, teachers, parents, and other staff personnel is encouraged. The handbook is divided into three sections. Section I contains an introduction to career education and provides background information on career education in the middle grades. Minimal expectancies for grades 6, 7, and 8 are listed; the use of individual file folders to maintain career data through the students' school years is explained; a middle school needs assessment is included; and guidance and counseling goals are discussed. Testing and interest inventories are listed and grade levels for inventory administration are suggested. The use of Career Days or Career Fairs is described and relevant forms are given. Section II contains a suggested matrix, student activities, worksheets, and handouts for use in the career education program. The activity-by-month matrix lists activities for grades 6, 7, and 8. Five program goals are suggested for each grade and each goal is accompanied by a set of career guidance activities. Title, grade level, objectives, time, and procedures are included for each of the 79 activities. Section III contains samples and lists of resource materials that are used throughout this handbook.
