Lifelong Learning and the Full-Time Minister: Non-Pastoral Clergy and Continuing Education
Olson, Joann S.
Journal of Ethnographic & Qualitative Research, v4 n1 p41-55 2009
Continuing education allows professionals to supplement their pre-professional training and respond to a rapidly changing world. Although seldom the focus of professional development research, clergy also benefit from continuing education and lifelong learning. Clergy-related research often details the professional development of pastors, but many individuals who consider themselves to be "working in ministry" serve in roles other than pastor. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 18 full-time, non-pastoral ministers to explore the nature of continuing education among non-pastoral ministry staff and to understand the extent to which they were intentionally engaged in professional development. These ministry staff indicated that they value lifelong learning and relationships with others, but they do not necessarily pursue a formal or structured plan for continuing education.
