Creating Asset-Rich Communities
Miller, Teresa Northern; Leslie-Toogood, Adrienne; Kaff, Marilyn
Principal Leadership, v5 n8 p32-37 Apr 2005
Adolescents today face increasing challenges, while the support systems that should help them meet and surmount those challenges are rapidly disappearing. Yearly statistics on teen substance abuse, depression, suicide, and violent crime continue to escalate. Teens with low attachments to school are most vulnerable because they are less likely to have academic success and more likely to engage in delinquent behavior. A group of researchers have identified a number of developmental assets that children need to successfully navigate adolescence. They documented "40 scientifically based experiences, relationships, opportunities, skills and character traits that form a foundation for healthy development." Schools alone can only provide part of those assets. This article presents a breakdown of assets showing how schools, families, and communities together can provide the necessary support to help adolescents grow into strong young adults. Embedding these developmental assets within the three systems can develop resiliency, increase achievement and long-term success of adolescents, and, simultaneously, strengthen families and communities.
