This document is a step-by-step guide to organizing a study circle program to serve as a vehicle to achieve communitywide dialogue for action and change. Part 1 provides an overview of communitywide study circle programs, with special emphasis on their operation and impact. Part 2 details the following steps in organizing a communitywide study circle program: (1) get started; (2) clarify your issue and think about discussion materials; (3) build your team; (4) develop a plan; (5) share the work of organizing study circles (plan and carry out communication; develop a budget and fund-raising plan; document and evaluate the program; recruit participants and form diverse groups; plan for actions; recruit, train, and support facilitators; plan the kickoff; find sites and handle logistics); (6) hold a round of study circles; and (7) sustain your program and expand the impact of your work. Part 3 profiles successful study circle programs in the following communities: Decatur, Georgia; Fayetteville, North Carolina; Guilderland, New York; Inglewood, California; and Springfield, Illinois. Part 4 contains appendixes presenting guidelines for involving public officials, young people, and the media in a study circle program, as well as a 17-item annotated bibliography. Fifteen sample documents, illustrations, and charts are included throughout the guide. (MN)
