Noting that too many children with elevated lead levels are not being identified in the United States, this report presents policy guidelines for increasing screening and follow-up care of children who most need these services, and for helping communities pursue the most appropriate approach to preventing childhood lead poisoning. Following an executive summary, chapter 1 of the report presents information on the extent of childhood lead poisoning in the United States, delineating, by state, the percentage of housing built before 1950. Chapter 2 presents a three-pronged approach to childhood lead poisoning prevention, focusing on assessment of lead exposure, policy development, and assurance of activities to prevent lead poisoning. Chapter 3 details six steps in developing and implementing a statewide screening plan: forming an advisory committee, assessing lead exposure and screening capacity, determining the boundaries of recommendation areas, deciding on appropriate screening, writing screening recommendations, and implementing the statewide plan. Chapter 4 discusses the roles of child health care providers in childhood lead poisoning prevention. Chapter 5 lists resources from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Chapter 6 delineates research priorities related to childhood lead poisoning prevention. The report also lists members of the Advisory Committee on Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention and concludes with a glossary. Some chapters contain references. (KB)
