This booklet is a guide and model for parents, educators, religious institutions, social service agencies, community centers, and other organizations that interact with African American males. The guide begins with the introduction of the African American Male Development Model, six criteria that, if internalized by males, would place them in a better position to make a contribution to themselves, their families, and society. These criteria are: (1) religious, philosophical or ideological orientation; (2) positive mental attitude; (3) the Nguzo Saba; (4) African American culture and history; (5) social development; and (6) social capacity. The two most important are the religious, philosophical, or ideological orientation and positive mental attitude. The Nguzo Saba is a black value system that forms the basis of continuing development through seven principles. A knowledge of African American culture and history is important in the young man's social development, and various rites of passage, mentoring, and manhood preparation strategies are described that contribute to social development in the context of the Nguzo Saba. Working to improve social capacity through community organization, political and social change organizations, and economic empowerment initiatives supports individual development as well.
