Integrating Quality Concepts into TAFE Courses.
Hayton, Geoff; And Others
This document contains the written outcomes from a 1988 project designed to result in the development and integration of instruction on quality into existing Australia's technical and further education (TAFE) courses. The document is intended for TAFE senior staff, staff developers, teaching staff, and curriculum developers; and senior management in industry, unions, and government departments. Following an introduction, the second section explains what constitutes quality, discusses key principles, lists the benefits of integrating quality into TAFE courses, and lists requirements for successful integration. Section 3 describes a study on quality that involved interviews in 40 firms. Section 4 makes policy suggestions regarding curriculum development, accreditation-reaccreditation, and staff development. Section 5 provides a framework for curriculum development. To illustrate that integration, Section 6 provides pilot curricula in a trade certificate course in sheet metal, an associate diploma course in mechanical engineering, and a short course in hotel bar supervision. Section 7 describes the types of materials that would be suitable for teaching modern quality concepts in existing TAFE courses. Descriptions are provided of training packages that teach the key principles of quality, the key principles applied to office administration, and the key principles applied to manufacturing. Section 8 provides an agenda for an 8-hour workshop to explain the document's principles to staff. Twenty-three references are included. Appendices contain a list of project advisors, information on existing courses on quality, and existing resources on quality. (The industry survey report and the video training package are not included.) (CML)
