Most childhood accidents can be classified into one of the following seven categories: poisonings, falls, burns, suffocation, drownings, cuts, and electrocutions. Precautionary methods to reduce many of these accidents are offered in this booklet. Proper selection, storage, maintenance, and use of toys is emphasized. Information on how to avoid dangers presented by childhood equipment such as high chairs, baby walkers, and safety gates is provided. Methods for child proofing a home to make it safe from poisons and other hazards are illustrated. Procedures to reduce the risk of burns and scalds in the home are surveyed. Guidelines are provided for the design, installation, and maintenance of play space and equipment. (SM)
