Partnerships: Connecting School and Community.
Lewis, Anne C.; And Others
Schools and businesses often form mutually beneficial partnerships to improve the quality of education. Businesses sponsor most projects by donating equipment, special awards, and corporate staff time for guest lectures. The concern for the productivity of their future work force inspires the interest of businesses in partnerships. On the national level, schools are helped by funds from major corporations, by the expertise of chief executive officers, by the commitment of corporate leaders to cooperate with schools, and by civic leaders and nonprofit organizations. On the state level, schools obtain financial support for education reforms through reform task forces led by business leaders. Finally, on the local level, schools, neighbors, and local businesses develop partnerships to link local resources with the needs of the school and community. Other partnerships involve individual volunteers, foundations, and higher education. A strategy for developing alliances includes declaring commitment; finding outside partners; engendering staff interest; announcing the partnership; establishing actual programs; assigning responsibilities; recruiting, orienting, and showing appreciation of volunteers; publicizing the program; and evaluating the program. Among the 21 exhibits included are sample letters, forms, and charts. (RG)
