Making A Difference: What Communities Can Do To Prevent Mental Handicap and Promote Lives of Quality. Volume III: Helping Children Live, Learn and Grow in Their Communities.
Forest, Marsha
The third of five volumes on the means by which Canadian communities can reduce the incidence of mental retardation, minimize existing impairment, and improve the quality of life of the mentally retarded, this booklet focuses on the education of handicapped children and the value of integration with non-handicapped peers in the home and community. After an introduction, sections discuss the following topics: needs of all children (to belong, for power, for freedom, for fun); the role of professionals; a case study illustrating how moving from a group home to a family environment made a difference; elements of prevention (recognizing the child for who he/she is, the importance of the environment); myths in education (credentials myth, myth of fixed intelligence, myth of the value of grouping); a proposal for the school system; things that stop students from learning; an Individual Education Plan; what to look for in community schools; key elements in a good teaching/learning situation; the positive example of the Wellington County Separate School Board; and other positive examples of effective change at the community level.
