Issues Related to the Quality of Life in West Alabama. Proceedings and Transcripts of a Public Forum.
Knopke, Harry J., Ed.
A public forum on community water quality was conducted by tenth grade students participating in the University of Alabama's Biomedical Sciences Preparatory Program (BioPrep). BioPrep was designed to provide rural high school students with an intensified education concentrating on mathematics, science, communication, rural life, health, and medicine. For four weeks students from five rural high schools in three Alabama counties--Greene, Hale, and Tuscaloosa--focused their attention on water quality issues and utilized social science research techniques learned in the BioPrep accelerated curricula during the school year to examine the structure and organization of their counties, to assess legal, financial, educational, and public services elements, to identify demographic characteristics, and to assess the health care system. The students interviewed officials and workers in county agencies and institutions as well as citizens to identify problems. Finally they developed possible solutions to the problems. The transcript of students' presentations includes explanations of research methodology, research results, and implications of identified problems and proposed solutions. The transcript of a panel discussion includes student questions about county issues and quality of life. (LFL)
