A futuristic study of the Thomas Jefferson Planning District (TJPD) in the year 2000 was conducted by Piedmont Virginia Community College (PVCC) to gain insights into those trends and pressures likely to affect the TJPD in the future. Interviews were conducted with 85 area leaders to determine their views and projections regarding lifestyles; institutional structures; training; changing jobs and functions; computers, telecommunications, and automation; 13 academic and vocational subject areas; major educational issues for PVCC; technological change; changes in living arrangements; political developments; changes in the role of private enterprise; leisure; social stratification and educational discrimination; the aging of society; the changing nature of work; external influences on education; and the expansion of knowledge. Later, the study participants were brought together to review results and discuss the educational implications of the study. Major study findings included the following: (1) computers, communications, and advanced mechanization technology will have a dramatic impact in many fields in the coming years; (2) the structure of many jobs will change, with sales people, industrial supervisors, and office workers becoming more professionalized; (3) the social stratification of society may increase as desirable jobs and educational programs become less available; (4) the aging of society may increase conservatism and geographic stability; and (5) growth in the TJPD may be limited by public policy.
