Breaking through Barriers. Workers Who Are Disabled.
Christian, Mary
These 12 profiles show the successes of workers with various handicaps who can serve as role models for people with disabilities and personalize knowledge for the non-disabled. Each profile begins with a brief remark by the individual on barriers and continues with his or her perspective on the work world and a discussion of his or her experiences and the set of barriers that needed to be broken. The individuals profiled are a dancer who is deaf, a counsellor at law with paraparisis, a printer with epilepsy, a student and office worker who has cerebral palsy, an auditor confined to a wheelchair with osteogenesis imperfecta, a boutique manager with epilepsy, a computer engineer who is blind, a social worker who is a paraplegic, a research neurochemist who is deaf, an actor/lecturer on crutches who was disabled by polio, a one-handed maintenance mechanic, and a teacher in a wheelchair. Both males and females are represented. A glossary of terms related to disabilities is appended. (YLB)
