Students are an untapped source of creative ideas for improving their schools, and they can offer recommendations for how to improve instruction and restructure the school to increase the level of student interest and participation. Listening to students requires adults and students to take risks. Additional challenges involve a shortage of time, unclear goals, and lack of communication. The commitment to this idea will take time, a lot of work, and the creation of communication feedback loops. But despite these challenges, finding strategies for engaging students in meaningful ways is worth it. This article describes how administrators can gradually move forward to take the faculty and students to a more productive level of interaction and understanding, most importantly: (1) build trust by ensuring that everyone at the school knows that the administrator intends to listen to what students think should change; (2) ensure that everyone realizes that changes are occurring because students have asked for them; and (3) involve students in the change process.
