Letting Students Take the Lead
Kinney, Patti
Principal Leadership, v6 n2 p33-36 Oct 2005
This article discusses student-led conferences. Student-led conferences can be organized in many ways; most involve students following an outline or a script to share work with their parents. Although this is a seemingly simple process to follow, student-led conferences require considerable planning and organization. The benefits, however, are many and well worth the effort. Perhaps the most significant benefit is the increase in parent participation. Student-led conferences also make students accountable for their work and a partner in improvement efforts. Specific skills, including self-evaluation and self-reflection, that students need to conduct conferences must be taught and practiced. Teachers and parents must also be prepared to participate to make student-led conferences successful. In order to have successful student-led conferences, the following must be done: (1) establish the purpose for your conferences; (2) decide who will be responsible for facilitating the conference; (3) determine how you will schedule students for the conferences; and (4) create a timeline for the conferences.
