Newly hired teachers regularly have questions about whether their lifestyles and actions outside of school could have repercussions on their career. Because they are expected to be role models for their students and thus held to a higher level of discretion than the general citizenry, educators have had restrictions placed on their living arrangements and how they behave in public. School employees have even been dismissed because of their sexual orientation or other aspects of their personal lives. Unfortunately, the legal guidelines regarding these matters are not completely clear. But there are some constitutional and statutory protections afforded to public school personnel, and in a number of cases, employees have challenged adverse employment decisions attributed to their lifestyles. This paper presents ideas on how school administrators deal with clashes over public educators' lifestyles.
