Although most institutions have had to deal with alcohol-related problems, many higher education leaders are unfamiliar with successful responses--and especially with proactive strategies. Few trustees and senior administrators have found a successful formula for dealing with alcohol on campus, and there are many reasons why. This article aims to dispel some of the confusion, summarize what is known about best practices, propose a strategy for success, and offer some cautionary advice. Most importantly, the author recommends that college and university boards cultivate a strong understanding of the problem of college drinking and techniques used to combat it, and then develop and fully fund effective data collection efforts, with senior administrators held accountable for reductions in alcohol problems and rewarded for success.
