Bouncing Back! How Your School Can Succeed in the Face of Adversity.
Patterson, Jerry; Patterson, Janice; Collins, Loucrecia
The purpose of this guide is to help leaders move their schools ahead in the face of adversity. It is intended for principals, teacher leaders, district administrators, and others who have a stake in helping schools move forward. The contents are based on qualitative research and actual experiences of schools effective in dealing with adversity. These experiences and the research culminated in the Seven Leadership Strengths of Resilient School Leaders. Chapter 1, "The Deeper Meaning of Resilience," introduces a research-based framework for the book. Chapters 2 through 8, titled after the seven strengths, explain how to implement concrete strategies for dealing with adversity: "Stay Focused on Core Values"; "Maintain High Expectations for Students and Adults"; "Create a Climate of Caring and Support"; "Take Charge"; "Remain Flexible in How You Get There"; "Be Positive in Spite of Adversity"; and "Create Meaningful Participation and Shared Responsibility." Chapter 9, "Putting It All Together," underscores the importance of the seven strengths working in concert. Appendix A presents a research base for the seven strengths. Appendix B offers techniques for building group consensus. The guide also contains a list of recommended readings and 19 references. (WFA)
