In 1992, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) launched a 3-year project titled Natural Resources for Equity in Science: Connecting Museums and Community Groups, also known as Project MOSAIC (Museums Offering Science Assistance in the Community). This manual and accompanying video, designed by Project MOSAIC, covers information ranging from convening an equity team to creating an assessment plan to involving community groups. It is a practical guide responsible for moving the museum along the continuum towards greater diversity. For the director, the manual provides advice about managing change while for the equity team, it provides advice about carrying out an institution-wide assessment process and the development of recommended actions. The manual is organized around the following components of a process of creating change: convening an equity committee to develop an institutional plan, developing partnerships with community-based organizations, conducting an institutional assessment, and designing an action plan to increase the participation of underserved communities.
