The enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in July, 1990 created the need for rehabilitationists to have a thorough knowledge of the provisions of this complex legislation. This document, divided into five lessons, examines issues from the perspective of the rehabilitation professional. Lesson 1, "Introduction and Overview" (Ronald R. Schmidt), provides a brief history of the law and then discusses its potential impact on societal attitudes and the rehabilitation profession in general. Part 1 of Lesson 2 (Jill Adams), "The Law of the ADA: Terminology and Regulations," explores the employment provisions of Title I and outlines legal definitions while part 2 focuses on public accommodations and the remaining ADA provisions. Lesson 3 includes two parts:"Accommodations for Workers with Physical Disabilities" (Joseph E. Havranek) and "Accommodations for Workers with Psychiatric Disabilities" (Laura Mancuso). Lesson 4, "Vocational Assessment and the ADA: Issues and Approaches for the Rehabilitation Professional" (Stephen W. Thomas), interprets those sections of ADA pertinent to vocational assessment and also suggests practical approaches to implementing appropriate evaluation strategies. Lesson 5, "ADA and State/Federal Rehabilitation: A Dawn of Change" (John Fenoglio) is a discussion of how the ADA will affect rehabilitation systems in the public sector.
