The Equity Principal: An Inclusive Approach to Excellence. Administrator Handbook.
Grayson, Dolores A.; And Others
This guide outlines a 3-day program for principals that sensitizes them to equity issues so they can create an educational environment true to the principles of equal education. Objectives are the following: (1) provide participants with an overview of equity concepts and effective schooling research; (2) increase awareness of classroom disparity; (3) expand observation and supervision skills to include equity issues related to curriculum, teacher-student interactions, and the learning environment; and (4) share research-based strategies, techniques, and resources with which to address disparities and improve student achievement. The program is conducted by local facilitators who have received leadership training. Each session includes research and self-assessment on effective schooling and what effective administrators can do to maximize the potential of all students. Equity concepts related to the following areas are infused into the program: (1) gender; (2) race; (3) disability; (4) national origin; and (5) socioeconomic class. After each session, participants make observations on their sites utilizing information studied in the workshop. The program also includes resources and strategies to be shared with staff and other administrators. Three worksheets, five forms and checklists, two transparency masters, one chart, and three evaluation questionnaires are included. A 228-item bibliography is appended. (FMW)
