Bitters, Barbara A.; Foxwell, Susan
This publication presents district administrators and staff with a model for developing and implementing a career/vocational equity program. Chapter 1 presents an overview of the model and suggests a program framework. Chapters 2 through 5 address the first four of five phases of the model. Chapter 2 provides background and information needed to build commitment for and give direction to the local vocational equity program. Chapter 3 explains the process for conducting an equity needs assessment in the local district. Chapter 4 addresses planning. Chapter 5 outlines the student competencies on which the model focuses as well as the school actions needed to fulfill the competencies. It offers seven major strategies to help the local planning team develop an effective vocational equity plan. Chapters 6 through 12 detail the seven strategies and their corresponding activities. Tips, cautions, and examples for each are given. The strategies are promotional, staff development, affirmative guidance, curricular, classroom/school environment, administrative, and parent/community involvement. Chapter 13 focuses on evaluation, the final phase of the model. Appendixes, amounting to over 100 pages, include support materials, sample forms, surveys, data collection charts, data tabulation worksheets, analysis guide sheets, and 31 references. (YLB)
