Ten Truths of Parent Involvement: A Workshop for Use in Chapter 1 Technical Assistance.
RMC Research Corp., Hampton, NH. Parent Involvement Center.
This guide aids Chapter 1 Technical Assistance Center staff in conducting a brief (70-minute) workshop on parent participation in compensatory education programs funded under Chapter 1 of the Education Consolidaton Improvement Act. The goal is to clarify the attitudes and perceptions that are needed to expand or improve an existing Chapter 1 parent involvement program. The workshop will be especially useful for school improvement teams including Chapter 1 staff, administrators, teachers, and parents. The following materials are needed: (1) an overhead projector; (2) a screen; (3) a table for projector; (4) a three-prong outlet adaptor; (5) an extra bulb; (6) a set of 11 overhead transparencies provided in the guide; (7) the presenter's guide; and (8) participant handouts, such as a list of references provided in the guide. The following "truths" are outlined: (1) all parents have hopes and goals for their children; (2) the home is one of several spheres of influence that simultaneously shape a child; (3) the parent is the central contributor to a child's education; (4) parent involvement must be a legitimate element of education; (5) parent involvement is a process, not a program of activities; (6) parents' interaction with their own children is the cornerstone of parent involvement; (7) parent involvement requires a vision, policy, and framework; (8) most barriers to parent involvement are found within school practices; (9) any parent can be "hard to reach"; and (10) successful parent involvement nurtures relationships and partnerships. A list of 12 references is included. (FMW)
