This booklet provides a brief overview of the fine arts curriculum and a detailed explanation of the music education program for the state of Texas. The overview of the music curriculum includes the rationale and the scope and sequence for elementary and secondary education. The special music programs for junior high are general music, band, orchestra, choral music, stage band, instrumental ensembles, and individualized study of applied music while high school programs include four years of the same plus vocal ensembles and courses in music theory and music history and literature. The section on teaching strategies for elementary and secondary programs includes: (1) a statement on accountability for learning; (2) two checklists for documenting student mastery levels; (3) guidelines on lesson presentation; (4) examples of student progress appraisal guidelines for grades 1-8 and high school band, orchestra, and choral music; (5) information on special instructional activities; and (6) information on programs for special student populations, including multicultural education and gifted and talented education. Facilities, equipment, and materials for the elementary music program, secondary instrumental program, and the secondary choral music program are also discussed. (DJC)
