Home Schooling Laws: All Fifty States. First Edition, 1986.
Deckard, Steve
To assist parents, educators, and law-makers, this guide presents each state's Compulsory Education Law for Home Schooling situations. Compilation of facts and laws derives from materials collected from the chief state school officer or designated authority. Because many states are updating laws and requirements, the manual is intended as a general guide. Following a table of contents of states, an explanation of the "Summary of Basic Home Schooling Laws" Chart is provided. State laws are defined according to outlined categories and elements. The first category, "application process," for example, identifies elements a parent must follow to start a home school: cost, contact local school authority, and contact state authority. For summary purposes, an "x" is placed in the chart's column for any element that is part of a given state's law. Elements requiring further explanation are designated with another letter. The text, which comprises the bulk of the manual, describes each state's elements in detail. In addition to the application process, other categories are teacher requirements, keeping records, testing and evaluation, curriculum, provision for movement, health and safety provisions, attendance requirements, control, miscellaneous, and diploma provision. The chart reflects the total of all elements if states have several options for parents to consider. (CJH)
