This syllabus will assist administrators and teachers in New York state in helping students meet the Regents Action Plan requirement for one year of high school music. Each student must acquire the knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the artistic, cultural, and intellectual accomplishments of civilization and develop the skills to express personal artistic talents. The first part of the syllabus describes course requirements. Each of the following areas is required: (1) listening, (2) performing, (3) composing, (4) using basic tool skills, and (5) developing a special interest independent project. For each of these areas the following information is provided: description and explanation, level, and scope. Specific criteria regarding the content, procedures, and evaluation of independent projects are also provided. The second part of the syllabus lists learner outcomes. The information provided for each of the specific areas outlined in part one and for computer music and electronic music includes focus, knowledge and understanding, attitudes, skills, and evaluative criteria. The appendix contains a statement of regents' goals and an article that discusses how to provide music education for the handicapped. (RM)
