The Complete College Catalog Book: A Guide to Catalog Processing and Production.
Kacmarczyk, Ronald H.; Rickes, Persis C.
A sourcebook on producing college catalogs is presented, with attention to marketing, information to be included in the catalog, presentation of the material, writing style, photographs, and assembling the finished publication. Marketing research is needed to promote the college effectively either to traditional students or to new segments of the market. The development of student and institutional profiles is part of the marketing research process. Catalog editors need to be informed on legislation and regulations affecting college promotional and informational materials. The catalog should include information on the school location, accreditation, admissions requirements, degrees offered, expenses, financial aid, housing, libraries and laboratories, academic requirements, support services, student life, and description of courses. Examples of biased or flawed writing and unbiased writing are included, and reference books that are helpful to the writer are identified. Proofreading and the use of a computer for creating the catalog are also addressed. Additional topics include: printing on newsprint; copy preparation; typesetting; design, layout, and formatting; and mailing and distribution. Examples of a marketing ad, a table of contents, and a page design are included, along with a bibliography. (SW)
