In the spring of 1983, an evaluation of the junior and senior high guidance programs in the Mesa Public Schools was conducted. Surveys were developed to solicit opinions from parents, teachers, counselors, administrators, career specialists, and students as to how counselors actually spend their time versus how they should spend their time. Results were analyzed separately for each group of respondents and for the junior high and high school programs. Parents, teachers, counselors, career specialists, and students believed that junior high counselors spend the greatest amount of time on student registration, followed by individual personal counseling and individual academic/vocational counseling. Administrators believed that junior high counselors devote the greatest amount of time to individual personal counseling, followed by registration and consultation with parents. All groups believed that counselors should spend most of their time on individual personal or academic/vocational counseling. Overall ratings of the junior high program varied by group; parent and student ratings were lowest. Results from the high school program evaluation were very similar, and recommendations cover both levels. Survey instruments and responses are included in the appendix. (BW)
