Extended Day Programs in Independent Schools. NAIS Surveys & Reports.
Nall, Susan W.; Switzer, Stephen E.
This survey of extended day programs in independent schools consists of data gathered from replies to questionnaires sent to National Association of Independent Schools member schools, interspersed with commentary from the authors. It is intended to portray what already exists, alert readers to concerns and responsibilities, and convey the variety of extended day programs throughout the country. After a brief explanatory introduction, the first major section, "What Schools Are Doing," provides information derived from the survey on the following topics: getting started, governance and contracts, space, enrollment and clientele, time, staffing and salaries, program design, communication, budget, licensing, and evaluation. The second section, "Voices from the Field," provides directors' descriptions of seven extended day programs at independent schools throughout the country. A brief summary presents general observations about the effectiveness of extended day programs, based on the survey as a whole. Four appendixes provide considerations in beginning and evaluating an extended day program, the questionnaire used in the survey, and a selected bibliography. (TE)
