Self-Concept and Drug Addiction: A Controlled Study of White, Middle-Socioeconomic Status Addicts.
Lindblad, Richard A.
This study investigated the questions of whether addicts have more negative self-attitudes than their matched controls, and if they do, whether the constructs of self theory are able to explain the differences. Subjects were selected from white middle socioeconomic status (WMSES) narcotic addicts being treated under the Narcotic Addict Rehabilitation Act of 1966. Persons who abuse marihuana, amphetamines, and/or barbituates exclusive of the opiates are not eligible for treatment under provisions of this law. The research data were collected by oral interview, written responses to a questionnaire, and administration of a copyrighted measurement scale, the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale. The results showed that addicts have significantly more negative self-attitudes than their matched controls. It also appears that the WMSES addict has some unique childhood background traits. Another important finding was that simply being reared in an area where narcotic use is common increases the risk of addiction. (Author)
