Intergenerational differences within the family were examined through an exploration of values in three-generation intra-family triads. Subjects (N=180) were 30 male and 30 female white middle class triads. Each triad consisted of a son, father, paternal grandfather or daughter, mother, maternal grandmother. Generation ranges were: youngest, 17-23 years; middle, 39-50 years; and oldest, 61-83 years. Subjects rated 14 values on a semantic differential scale. The hypotheses of generational similarities in long-term, terminal values and generational differences in short-term, instrumental values were supported. The oldest generation rated instrumental values appropriate to retired life higher, while maintaining work-related values. More value similarities than differences were found between the sexes across generations, reflecting woman's role as a value transmitter. A predicted interaction of self-esteem and generation with values was minimally supported, warranting further research. (Author/NRB)
