Statistical Evaluation of the Effectiveness of a Preparatory Study Program for the Teacher Certification Examination in Physical Education at Southern Connecticut State University. Theory and Methods of Adult Education.
Mee, Jean
A test preparation program was implemented at Southern Connecticut State University to assist students in passing the Praxis II content examination in physical education. The study program had not been evaluated for effectiveness. A review of the literature provided background information on teacher certification, test-taking skills, test preparation programs, and evaluation methodology. Data were collected on the certification examination scores of 80 teacher preparation program students. Inferential statistical analysis was completed with a chi-square analysis. The 0.5 level of significance and a critical value of 3.84 were used for the chi-square analysis. The value of chi square was 13.058. The alternative hypothesis was supported, and the null hypothesis rejected. Results reveal a statistically significant relationship between participation in the test preparation study program and success in passing the certification examination. It is concluded that, based on the statistical analysis, the study program is effective in improving the pass rate on the certification examination. Potential benefits to the university were identified. Three appendixes contain descriptions of the physical education test and its content and the test preparation study outline.
