National Household Education Survey of 1995. Adult Education Data File User's Manual.
Collins, Mary A.; And Others
The 1995 National Household Education Survey (NHES:95) was a random digit dial telephone survey of households developed by the National Center for Education Statistics and conducted by Westat, Inc. The first full-scale implementation of the NHES was in 1991. The NHES:95 included two topical survey components, one called the Adult Education (AE) survey and the other the Early Childhood Education Program Participation Survey. This manual provides documentation and guidance for users of the public release data file for the AE component of the survey, which focused on adults' participation in adult education. Information about the purpose of the study, the data collection instruments, the sample design, and data collection and processing procedures is presented. There is also some information about factors that should be considered when using the data. For the AE component, telephone interviews were completed with 19,722 adults aged 16 and older who were not enrolled in elementary or secondary school and not on active duty with the U.S. armed forces. They included 11,713 participants in adult education and 8,009 nonparticipants. Seven appendixes present information about study methodology and the screening and interview questionnaires. (Contains 8 tables, 2 figures, and 26 references.) (SLD)
