The Effectiveness of Listening Lessons in the Kindergarten as Determined by the Listening Response Test.
Steen, Arleen Mollie
Selected possibilities for improving the listening of kindergarten children were investigated. Seven experimental teachers, seven control teachers, an experimental group (125 kindergarten children), and two control groups (127 and 122 children, respectively) took part in the study. Twenty listening lessons and a Listening Response Test, composed of 18 items of three levels of comprehension (simple memory, series recall, and analysis) were developed for use in the study. All participants completed the Listening Response Pre-test and Post-test and the Metropolitan Readiness Test. Only the experimental group utilized the prepared lessons. The findings of this study indicate that attention should be given to direct instruction in listening in the kindergarten, and that the specific skills of simple memory, series recall, and analysis can be evaluated and improved.
